Broad expertise in metal craftsmanship

We specialize in the weather-proofing techniques that make those installations last for the life of the building. At Waterways, we not only make it our business to provide beautiful architectural accents, but we also use our knowledge and experience to help protect our customers from the long term damage caused by water penetration.

“Bargain” solutions often end up costing much more over time, since water penetration may not become apparent until after severe damage has occured–sometimes months or years later. We are named Waterways because we make it our business to be mindful of how wet weather will affect a structure. So we provide products and custom flashing solutions to protect the investments that our customers make in their homes and businesses.

Owned and managed by husband and wife team, Ray and Natalie Hines, Our methods have been mastered, like the artisans of old, through the time-tested process of apprenticeship.

Here we showcase our expertise in copper work in general, and offer custom copper and metal work in north east of Oklahoma,  north west Arkansas and south west Missouri.

Ray was extremely helpful with completing a design from just photos and basic measurements of the chase, and calculated the opening sizes to insure they would draft properly.

Custom Metalwork FAQ

Find answers to common questions about our custom sheet metal fabrication, copper work, architectural metalwork, and flashing services.

What types of custom metalwork does Waterways Sheet Metal create?
We specialize in a broad range of custom metal fabrication and architectural metalwork, including: chimney flashing and repairs, cupolas and roof vents, guttering and louvers, finials, custom interior metalwork (range hoods, countertops, sinks, fireplaces), dormer windows, through-wall flashing for bay windows, and commercial copper projects. Whether you need weatherproofing solutions or architectural accents, we handle both residential and commercial custom metalwork for North Carolina to Alaska.
Do you use copper for all custom metalwork projects?
Copper is our specialty and primary material—it’s superior for durability, weather-resistance, and beauty. However, we also work with Rheinzink and other premium metals for specific applications. Copper is ideal for most projects because it naturally develops a protective patina, requires no painting or maintenance, and lasts for generations. Rheinzink and similar materials offer alternative aesthetics and cost considerations. We’ll recommend the best material for your specific application during the design consultation.
Can you handle both small custom projects and large commercial work?
Yes. We successfully work on projects ranging from small residential repairs and custom kitchen metalwork to medium commercial installations. We’ve handled everything from custom copper range hoods and countertops to major panel replacement on commercial towers. Our experience spans residential, commercial, and architectural applications. Whether your project is a single custom piece for your home or a complex commercial fabrication, Ray and Natalie bring decades of expertise to ensure superior craftsmanship regardless of scope.
What makes custom metalwork better than pre-fabricated or stock products?
Custom metalwork is tailored precisely to your building, measurements, and aesthetic preferences. Stock products often require compromises in fit, design, or material quality. Our custom approach means: perfect fit (no gaps or alignment issues), architectural design integrity (complements your building’s style), superior craftsmanship (hand-soldered joints, artisan techniques), durability (built to last generations, not years), and weather-tight sealing (no caulking or adhesives that deteriorate). With custom work, you invest in beauty and protection that ages gracefully.
How long does a custom metalwork project typically take?
Timeline depends on project complexity. Most custom projects take 4-8 weeks from order to delivery. The process includes: 1) Initial consultation and measurements, 2) Design and quote development (1-2 weeks), 3) Fabrication (2-4 weeks depending on complexity), 4) Quality inspection and packaging, and 5) Shipping. Complex commercial projects or items requiring extensive custom design may take longer. We provide a detailed timeline with your quote. We keep clients updated with progress photos during fabrication so you see your piece being built.
Do you repair existing metalwork or only create new custom pieces?
We do both. We’re experienced in repairing and retrofitting existing flashing, cupolas, guttering, and metalwork. Many of our projects involve repairing failed installations or addressing water damage from deteriorating flashing. We also specialize in flashing repair and can retrofit new flashing systems to protect buildings from water penetration. Additionally, we create entirely custom new pieces tailored to your specifications. Whether you’re upgrading, repairing, or building from scratch, we help assess the problem and provide a lasting solution.
Do cupolas and louvers really improve roof ventilation and home health?
Absolutely. Proper roof ventilation is critical for extending roof lifespan, preventing moisture accumulation, reducing heating/cooling costs, and preventing mold growth. Our cupolas and louvers ventilate nearly 90% of their square-foot exposure, far exceeding typical ridge vents (which provide only 30-50% efficiency and often become clogged). Building codes require one square foot of free air space per 150 square feet of attic floor space. Our designs use time-tested louver systems that shed even blowing rain while providing superior airflow. They never need painting, re-caulking, or maintenance once installed—they’re simply problem-free for the life of the building.
What is the difference between interior and exterior custom metalwork services?
Exterior metalwork includes flashing, cupolas, guttering, roof vents, finials, and louvers—all focused on weather-proofing and architectural accents. These pieces endure weather, temperature swings, and moisture. Interior metalwork includes custom range hoods, copper countertops, sinks, fireplace surrounds, and decorative architectural elements—focused on aesthetics, durability, and functional beauty. Interior work still uses premium materials like hand-finished copper and Rheinzink, but prioritizes visual impact and kitchen/living space integration. Both require custom fabrication and expert craftsmanship, just with different functional and aesthetic goals.
How much does custom metalwork cost? What factors affect pricing?
Pricing varies widely based on material choice (copper vs. alternative metals), size and complexity (larger or more intricate pieces require more material and labor), design customization (architectural detail and hand-finishing time), and shipping distance. Custom metalwork is a premium investment—you’re paying for expert craftsmanship, superior materials, and durability that lasts generations. We provide detailed quotes after discussing your specific needs and seeing measurements. Unlike mass-produced alternatives that fail in years, our work protects your building and adds lasting value. Contact us for a personalized estimate.
What areas do you service for custom metalwork installation?
We fabricate and ship custom metalwork nationwide throughout the continental United States. Each piece is carefully packaged in custom-built protective crates for safe transit. For installation services, we primarily serve northern Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, southwest Missouri, and southeast Kansas. If you’re in or near our service area, we can coordinate installation with your contractor to ensure proper setup. If you’re outside our service area, we work with you on design and fabrication while you coordinate with a local contractor for installation. We’re happy to communicate with your installer to ensure everything goes smoothly.
